NCERT Unveils New Learning Module for Classes 9–12

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced an introductory module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12, in line with the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The initiative aims to equip students with essential skills to understand and navigate an increasingly AI-driven world.

Titled around the message “Think Smart. Create with AI. Learn Responsibly,” the module is designed for beginners and does not require students to have prior knowledge of artificial intelligence. It seeks to develop critical thinking, creativity, logical reasoning and problem-solving abilities through practical, activity-based learning.

Learning Through Activities and Real-World Examples

The module introduces Computational Thinking as a systematic approach to identifying, understanding and solving problems. Students will explore how AI works, its applications in everyday life, its potential benefits and its limitations.

Instead of relying only on theoretical instruction, the learning material encourages discussions, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection. Activities can be conducted with or without digital devices, allowing schools with different levels of technological infrastructure to participate in the learning process.

Focus on Ethical and Responsible AI

A key component of the module is the responsible use of artificial intelligence. Students will be encouraged to understand the importance of protecting personal information, maintaining data privacy, recognising misinformation and checking AI-generated information before accepting it as accurate.

The module also highlights fairness, digital safety and the need to identify potentially misleading content. These lessons are intended to help students become more aware of the risks associated with emerging technologies and make informed decisions when using AI tools.

Aligned with NEP 2020

The initiative supports the broader vision of NEP 2020 to strengthen contemporary skills and prepare learners for future academic and professional opportunities. By combining computational thinking with AI awareness, NCERT aims to encourage students to use technology creatively while retaining human judgement, independent thinking and ethical responsibility.

The new module represents a step towards preparing school students not only to understand emerging technologies but also to use them safely, thoughtfully and responsibly.
