The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) awarded 3,763 degrees to 3,442 students during its 64th Convocation for the 2025–26 academic year. The institute achieved a major research milestone by awarding a record 620 PhD degrees, the highest annual PhD tally in its history.
The degrees awarded during the academic year included 1,713 undergraduate, 1,430 postgraduate and 620 doctoral degrees. Of the 3,442 graduating students, 791 were women and 2,651 were men.
3,333 Degrees Awarded in Autumn Session
During the two-day Autumn Convocation and Departmental Degree Award Functions held on August 22 and 23, IIT Bombay conferred 3,333 degrees on 3,042 students. These included 1,663 undergraduate, 1,319 postgraduate and 351 PhD degrees.
The institute also awarded 22 three-year Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees as an early-exit option for students enrolled in four-year BTech programmes. The option allows eligible students who complete the required credits to graduate with a BS degree.
Record PhD Numbers
The 620 PhD degrees awarded this academic year represent a significant rise in doctoral completions. IIT Bombay had previously not crossed 500 PhD degrees in a single year, making this the first time the institute has exceeded 600.
The increase follows an internal review of long-pending doctoral research. The institute identified students whose PhDs had remained incomplete for several years and worked to address issues including supervision, changes in students’ professional circumstances and delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Focus on Academic Excellence and Research
The 64th Convocation also featured a Medal Distribution Ceremony, where students were recognised for outstanding academic and research achievements. Awards included the President of India Medal, Institute Gold Medal, Institute Silver Medals and excellence awards for PhD research.
The record graduation figures underline IIT Bombay’s continued emphasis on advanced education, doctoral research, innovation and academic excellence, while the institute is also working to strengthen pathways into research and reduce delays in PhD completion.
