The University of Delhi (DU) has announced a one-time relaxation in promotion criteria for students belonging to the 2025–26 academic batch. According to a notification issued by the university’s Controller of Examinations, students who have completed one year of study will be exempted from the earlier requirement of securing 28 out of 44 credits to be promoted. The relaxation applies only to the 2025–26 batch and will not extend to subsequent batches.
The university has stated that all other provisions of its earlier notifications will remain unchanged and that the decision was approved by the competent authority.
The decision has, however, prompted questions from some DU teachers about its timing and transparency. Teachers pointed out that students had already entered their third semester when the relaxation was announced. Third-semester classes began on July 28, while some examination results were still being declared through August.
Representatives of the Delhi University Teachers’ Federation (DTF) have questioned why the university introduced the exemption without publicly explaining the circumstances or reasons behind the change. They have also raised concerns about maintaining consistency and stability in the university’s examination system.
The university’s notification does not specify the reasons or circumstances that led to the one-time relaxation. The exemption therefore remains specific to the 2025–26 batch, while the existing promotion requirements continue for subsequent batches.
