IIT Bombay and IISc Expand Research Ties with IBM

IIT Bombay and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have expanded their research collaborations with IBM to advance work in agentic AI, sovereign AI, quantum computing and next-generation computing systems. The expanded partnerships were announced on October 1, 2026.

Under the collaboration with IIT Bombay, researchers and students will work with IBM on areas including Indic language models, multimodal AI, AI infrastructure and knowledge retrieval. The research also aims to improve AI capabilities for Indian languages through model adaptation and optimisation.

The partnership with IISc, which builds on a collaboration that began in 2021, will focus on agentic AI systems, AI applications and quantum computing algorithms. Researchers will also explore AI-based energy analytics using lightweight time-series foundation models.

The expanded collaborations are also expected to create opportunities for faculty, students and researchers to work on industry-linked challenges and emerging technologies. The institutions said the partnerships will support interdisciplinary research and help develop talent for the future of computing.
