Finland and Brazil Receive UNESCO’s 2026 ICT Prize

UNESCO has awarded the 2026 King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICTs in Education to two AI-driven education initiatives from Finland and Brazil. The projects were recognised for using technology to support creativity, critical thinking and more equitable access to quality learning.

Finland’s Generation AI programme provides evidence-based learning materials and classroom activities designed to help students move beyond simply using AI and instead understand, question and critically engage with AI systems. The programme also focuses on learner participation, inquiry and ethical reflection.

Brazil’s Redação Paraná combines an AI-powered digital platform with teacher support to strengthen writing and language skills. Students work through structured cycles of writing and revision, receiving AI-assisted feedback alongside guidance from teachers.

The two projects were selected from more than 100 nominations submitted by UNESCO member states and organisations. An independent jury of experts in digital technology and education evaluated the initiatives.

The recognition highlights how AI and digital technologies are increasingly being used in education not only for efficiency, but also to develop creativity, critical thinking and meaningful learning experiences.
