UGC Approves One-Year Online PG Programmes

UGC Approves One-Year Online PG Programmes

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the introduction of one-year postgraduate (PG) programmes through Online and Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes, in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.

In a fresh circular, the UGC announced that the revised guidelines replace its earlier notification issued on July 24. Under the new policy, only those Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) already recognised by the UGC to offer two-year postgraduate programmes through Online or ODL mode will be eligible to launch the corresponding one-year PG programme in the same discipline.

The Commission clarified that institutions must ensure the programme complies with NEP 2020, relevant UGC regulations, applicable statutory body norms, and the UGC Curriculum and Credit Framework for Postgraduate Programmes.

Before introducing the new programme, universities must also obtain approval from their competent academic bodies, including the Board of Studies, Academic Council, or an equivalent authority.

The move is expected to provide greater flexibility in higher education and expand opportunities for eligible graduates to complete their postgraduate studies in a shorter duration through recognised online and distance learning modes.
