The Central Government has appointed TK Anil Kumar, a 1995-batch IAS officer from the Karnataka cadre, as the new Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy. A former Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Rural Development, Kumar assumes office at a crucial time when India’s school education system is undergoing major reforms.
His appointment comes as the Ministry of Education continues the nationwide implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, with several key initiatives still in progress. Among the immediate priorities before the new secretary are the rollout of board examination reforms, implementation of the three-language policy, strengthening digital education and assessment systems, addressing teacher shortages, and reducing learning gaps among students that widened in recent years.
He is also expected to oversee policy execution, improve the quality of school education, and ensure that ongoing reforms are implemented effectively across states. His leadership will play a key role in shaping the future of school education and achieving the objectives outlined under NEP 2020.
