The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, has cancelled its 34th Annual Convocation, which was scheduled to take place on September 12, 2026. The university cited “unavoidable circumstances” for the cancellation.
According to an official communication issued by the university, graduating students from the 2026 batch will now receive their degrees in absentia. Students will have the option of receiving their certificates by courier or collecting them directly from the NLSIU campus.
The university said that despite the collective efforts of the administration, it was unable to conduct the scheduled convocation. NLSIU has also stated that alternative arrangements for conferring the degrees have been made after obtaining the necessary approvals from its governing bodies.
Graduating students will reportedly receive a new form and instructions through which they can select their preferred option for receiving their certificates. The university had earlier informed students on August 3 that September 12 was the proposed date for the annual convocation.
The cancellation comes amid recent developments involving the Bar Council of India (BCI) and students of NALSAR Hyderabad. Earlier this month, NLSIU’s 2026 graduating batch and more than 120 alumni had criticised the BCI’s now-withdrawn action against NALSAR students and demanded an unconditional apology.
The students had also expressed their disagreement with the proposed participation of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra in NLSIU’s convocation. However, NLSIU’s official notification cancelling the event does not cite these developments as the reason and attributes the cancellation only to unavoidable circumstances.
