IITs Expand Executive Education For Working Professionals

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are rapidly expanding their executive education offerings for working professionals, entering a space traditionally dominated by the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs). The shift has accelerated over the past four to five years, driven by growing demand for upskilling and the wider acceptance of online and hybrid learning.

Several IITs now offer full online and hybrid master’s degrees, postgraduate diplomas and specialised programmes, allowing professionals to earn an IIT qualification without taking a career break. Popular areas include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Data Science, electric vehicles, semiconductor technology, quantum computing, robotics, cybersecurity and sustainability.

IIT Madras currently offers more than 20 executive programmes, while IIT Bombay has seen a major rise in participation. Its executive programme enrolment increased from 1,493 participants across 56 programmes in 2020 to nearly 20,000 across 133 programmes in 2025.

IIT Kanpur, which had no online executive postgraduate degrees before 2020, launched its eMasters initiative in 2022. It now offers nine programmes, including seven MTechs, an MSc and a PG Diploma.

IIT Guwahati has also expanded its online offerings, including an MTech in Flood and Water Resource Management, which has attracted significant interest from professionals and government-sponsored candidates.

The programmes can be considerably more expensive than regular IIT courses because they are generally self-financed. Some executive MTech programmes at IIT Guwahati cost around ₹8 lakh, while its online PG Diploma in Healthcare Product Development and Management costs ₹3.5 lakh.

IIT officials say the expansion is being driven not only by revenue but also by the growing need for lifelong learning, industry-relevant skills and technology-focused training. With industries rapidly adopting AI and digital technologies, professionals across technical and non-technical fields are increasingly seeking opportunities to upgrade their skills while continuing to work.
