Kamrup (Metro) Schools Directed to Reduce Student School Bag Weight
The Inspector of Schools, Kamrup (Metro), has directed all government, provincialised, and private schools in the district to strictly comply with government guidelines aimed at reducing the weight of school bags carried by students.
Under the directive, school bag weights must not exceed 1.5 kg for Classes I–II, 2–3 kg for Classes III–V, 4 kg for Classes VI–VII, 4.5 kg for Classes VIII–IX, and 5 kg for Class X.
Schools have been instructed to ensure students carry only the required books as per the timetable, while parents are encouraged to purchase lightweight bags with broad padded straps. Institutions have also been asked to create awareness about health issues linked to heavy school bags and avoid prescribing unauthorised supplementary books.
District-level inspection teams will conduct random checks to ensure compliance, and authorities have warned that violations of the guidelines will attract strict action
