58 Engineering Colleges Shut Down Across India, AICTE Data Reveals

A total of 58 engineering colleges across India have closed down, according to the latest AICTE data. Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of closures, followed by Maharashtra, reflecting a continuing decline in demand for engineering seats at several institutions.

The closures have been attributed to factors such as low student enrolment, vacant seats, financial challenges, and changing career preferences among students. The development comes as engineering aspirants continue to seek admissions through JEE Main and JEE Advanced into institutions with stronger academic performance and placement records.

Education experts say the trend highlights the need for colleges to improve infrastructure, curriculum, industry partnerships, and employability to remain competitive in the evolving higher education landscape.
