The Assam Legislative Assembly has passed the Majuli University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, marking a significant step towards transforming the Majuli University of Culture into a multidisciplinary institution.
With the amendment, the university will now function as Majuli University, offering a wider range of academic programmes in Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Technology, and other disciplines, while continuing to preserve and promote Assam’s rich cultural heritage.
The reform is in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to expand opportunities for quality teaching, advanced research, innovation, and skill-based education.
The state government believes the transformation will strengthen higher education in Assam and provide students with greater academic and career opportunities while maintaining Majuli’s unique cultural identity.
