What the New NCERT Book Says

A new NCERT Class 9 Social Science textbook presents Mahatma Gandhi’s idea of “Ram Rajya” as an ideal model of governance based on transparency, compassion, welfare and a people-centric approach.

The chapter “Governance and Public Policy” also discusses the traditional concept of Rajdharma, emphasising that governance involves responsibilities towards society and is not simply about exercising power. It draws from traditions including the Vedic period, Ramayana and Mahabharata to explain ideas of good governance.

The textbook highlights that good governance should focus on peace, prosperity, justice and the well-being of people. It also connects these ideas with Gandhi’s interpretation of Ram Rajya and its relevance to public policy.

The book, titled Understanding Society India and Beyond – Part 2, is part of NCERT’s revised Class 9 learning material under the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 and NEP 2020.
