The Uttar Pradesh government has doubled the monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns undergoing compulsory rotatory internships in government medical colleges and medical universities across the state. The stipend has been increased from ₹12,000 to ₹25,000 per month, providing significant financial relief to medical and dental interns.
The decision was approved by the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday. This marks the second major increase in the internship stipend under the current state government. In 2021, the stipend had been raised from ₹7,500 to ₹12,000 per month.
The revised stipend will apply to students who have completed their MBBS or BDS examinations and are undertaking their mandatory internship in government-run medical institutions. During this period, interns work alongside doctors and healthcare staff and assist with patient care in wards, outpatient departments and emergency services. They may also be assigned night duties as part of their clinical training.
Hike Follows Interns’ Protest
The stipend increase comes shortly after MBBS interns from several government medical colleges protested demanding better financial compensation. Interns from institutions including King George’s Medical University, Ram Manohar Lohia Institute of Medical Sciences, BRD Medical College and Lala Lajpat Rai Medical College participated in the August 22 demonstration.
The interns had reportedly been demanding a monthly stipend of ₹30,000. The government’s decision to raise it to ₹25,000 is expected to provide additional financial support while recognising the workload and contribution of interns to patient-care services.
The move is also expected to bring Uttar Pradesh’s internship stipend closer to the levels offered in several other states and central medical institutions.
