Rising temperatures and severe heatwave conditions across several parts of India have prompted multiple state governments to shut schools early or extend summer vacations, with states including Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh revising academic schedules to safeguard students.
According to reports, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave alerts for several northern, central, and eastern states, with temperatures crossing 45°C in some regions. In response, education departments have announced early closures, revised school timings, and longer summer breaks to reduce students’ exposure to extreme weather conditions.
In Delhi, schools are scheduled to remain closed from May 11 to July 1, while Punjab has announced summer vacations from May 25 to June 30. West Bengal has also extended holidays for government-aided schools until May 31, citing prevailing heat conditions. Uttar Pradesh districts including Noida and Ghaziabad have temporarily shifted school hours to morning sessions before vacations begin.
Authorities have urged parents and schools to follow official advisories and take precautions against heat-related illnesses, as concerns grow over student safety amid persistent high temperatures.
