MBBS and BDS interns across Jammu and Kashmir have launched an indefinite strike, demanding an increase in their monthly stipend from the existing ₹12,300 to ₹30,000.
The protesting interns said the stipend has remained unchanged for nearly seven years, despite rising living costs and increasing clinical responsibilities. They highlighted duties in emergency departments, OPDs, wards, night shifts and rural postings.
The interns also pointed to the significant difference between stipends in J&K and several other states, where medical interns reportedly receive between ₹25,000 and ₹45,000 or more per month.
A government committee formed in 2023 had reportedly recommended an increase in the stipend, but the proposed revision has not yet been formally implemented.
Meanwhile, J&K Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo acknowledged that the demand was genuine and said the proposal to increase the stipend is under process and has been sent to the Finance Department. She also urged the interns to reconsider the strike, citing possible impact on patient care.
The interns, however, are seeking a written government order on the stipend hike and have said the strike will continue until their demand is formally addressed.
