In an unusual turn of events, a student who was unable to secure admission to the BTech Cyber Security programme at IIT Kanpur allegedly hacked the institute’s official website, leaving behind a message that read, “All I Need Is Just a Fair Chance.”
According to IIT Kanpur, the student had failed to qualify for admission through the institute’s cyber security hackathon-based selection process. Instead of accepting the outcome, he reportedly gained unauthorized access to the institute’s website and posted his appeal, drawing widespread attention on social media.
Rather than immediately initiating legal action, IIT Kanpur has chosen a different approach. The institute has decided not to file an FIR at this stage and is instead considering giving the student an opportunity to demonstrate his cybersecurity skills in a legitimate environment.
Speaking on the incident, IIT Kanpur Director Prof. Manindra Agrawal said the institute is exploring the possibility of offering the student an internship at C3iHub, the institute’s cybersecurity innovation centre. However, he emphasized that hacking institutional systems is illegal and cannot be justified as a means of seeking opportunities.
The student has also been encouraged to reapply for admission next year through the proper selection process. The institute hopes the incident can serve as a learning experience while reinforcing the importance of using technical skills responsibly and ethically.
The case has sparked widespread discussion across the education and cybersecurity communities. While many have praised IIT Kanpur’s balanced and reform-oriented response, others have stressed that ethical hacking should always be conducted with proper authorization and within legal boundaries.
