IIT Gandhinagar Lets BTech Students Earn Credits Through Industry Semester
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar has introduced a unique semester-long industry exposure programme that allows BTech students to spend their seventh semester working with companies, research labs, startups, or academic institutions while earning academic credits.
Offered through the elective course ‘IN 498 – External Exposure’, the programme enables students to earn up to 16 academic credits that count toward their degree. Unlike traditional internships, students spend an entire semester working on real-world projects, gaining hands-on industry experience without delaying graduation.
Since its launch, 18 students have participated in the programme, securing opportunities at leading organisations including Qualcomm, Samsung R&D, Oracle, IISc, California Institute of Technology, and several startups. The initiative aims to make engineering graduates more industry-ready by integrating practical experience into the undergraduate curriculum.
