ASSEB Allows English Medium for Maths, Science in Class 9

The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB), Division-I (erstwhile SEBA), has issued a notification allowing Class 9 students to study General Mathematics and General Science in English medium, even if they are pursuing other subjects in a different language medium. The decision is applicable for the 2026–27 academic session and aims to provide greater flexibility to students in subject learning. According to the official notice issued on May 16, students will be permitted to opt for English-medium instruction in the two subjects provided that schools have the required teaching facilities available. The board clarified that there will be no restriction on students choosing English medium for General Maths and Science, regardless of the medium of instruction followed for other subjects. The board further stated that since the Class 9 registration process is nearly complete, no changes will be required in the registration cards or procedures for students opting for the change in medium for the two subjects. Officials clarified that the mention of a student’s medium during Class 9 registration will not create complications in the future. ASSEB also informed that when such students appear for the HSLC examination, the subject-wise medium of instruction will be properly recorded to ensure smooth and accurate evaluation of answer scripts. The notification has been circulated to education officials and schools across Assam for implementation.
