The University Grants Commission (UGC) has invited applications from eligible higher education institutions seeking recognition to offer programmes through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online modes for the 2026-27 academic year.
According to the UGC notice, institutions can submit their applications online through the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) portal from September 1 to September 15, 2026. The recognition will apply to academic sessions beginning January–February 2027 and onwards.
After completing the online application, institutions must also submit the original affidavit and required annexures in hard copy. These documents must reach the UGC’s Distance Education Bureau office in New Delhi by September 25, 2026.
The UGC clarified that submitting an application does not automatically grant recognition. Applications will be scrutinised to ensure that institutions meet the prescribed UGC requirements for online and distance education programmes.
Institutions planning to introduce or continue online and distance-learning programmes for the upcoming session have been advised to complete the process within the specified deadlines and check the DEB website for application fees and further instructions.
