A 17-year-old student from Erode, Tamil Nadu, Pranav Ilango, has earned a full scholarship worth approximately ₹3.55 crore to study at Brown University in the United States, offering an inspiring example of choosing an alternative academic path beyond the conventional JEE and NEET routes.
Pranav shifted from the CBSE curriculum to Cambridge IGCSE in Class 6 and later pursued A-levels. Despite pressure to follow the traditional engineering or medical entrance route, he continued with an international curriculum and achieved outstanding academic results.
He secured the highest possible grade, A+Star, in all nine IGCSE subjects and also achieved the highest grade in all six of his A-level subjects.
At Brown University, Pranav plans to take advantage of the institution’s Open Curriculum, which allows students considerable flexibility in selecting courses before choosing a concentration. He intends to explore Applied Mathematics and Public Health, combining the two fields through interdisciplinary study.
Beyond academics, Pranav is also a competitive chess player, holding a FIDE rating of 1800 and having represented Tamil Nadu in chess tournaments in France.
His journey highlights how students can pursue diverse academic interests and international opportunities by choosing an educational path aligned with their strengths and ambitions.
