DU Students Build Inclusive Navigation Technology

Students of Maitreyi College, University of Delhi (DU) have developed SUGAM (Smart, Universal, Guided, Accessible Mobility), an innovative indoor navigation system designed to help persons with visual, hearing, and mobility impairments move independently within buildings. The college describes it as India’s first student-led inclusive indoor navigation system.

Developed under faculty guidance, SUGAM combines voice-guided navigation, visual and vibration-based alerts, multilingual support, and digital accessibility tools to make indoor spaces more inclusive. The system also features an integrated digital pass for campus access and an audio signage facility, enabling users without smartphones or digital literacy to navigate buildings with ease.

Speaking at the launch, dignitaries praised SUGAM as a homegrown innovation with the potential to be implemented in hospitals, educational institutions, and commercial complexes, promoting greater accessibility across public spaces.
