IITs Expand Beyond Engineering with Foreign Language Programmes

The Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) are broadening their academic offerings by introducing structured foreign language programmes alongside engineering and technology education. These courses aim to equip students with global communication skills and improve their career opportunities in international academia and industry.

Several IITs now offer courses in French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Spanish, and other foreign languages through their Humanities Departments, International Relations Offices, and Continuing Education Centres. In addition, many language programmes are available online through the NPTEL and SWAYAM platforms, making them accessible to learners across India.

Among the leading institutions, IIT Kanpur has one of the oldest and most structured Foreign Language Programmes, coordinated by its Department of Humanities and Social Sciences and administered through the Centre for Continuing Education.

These initiatives reflect the IITs’ growing focus on interdisciplinary education, helping students develop language proficiency alongside technical expertise and preparing them for global careers and international collaborations.
