India Loses 94,000 Government Schools in a Decade as Enrolment Drops by 2.26 Crore

A recent NITI Aayog report has revealed a sharp decline in the number of government schools across India, highlighting growing challenges in the country’s education system.

According to the report, 94,000 government schools have closed over the past 10 years, averaging nearly 25 school closures every day. The number of government schools fell from 11.07 lakh in 2014–15 to 10.13 lakh in 2024–25.

The report also noted a significant decline in student enrolment, with government schools witnessing a drop of 2.26 crore students during the same period. Additionally, the number of government-aided schools decreased from 83,000 to 79,000.

The findings raise concerns about the future of rural education, access to quality schooling, and the need for stronger measures to improve enrolment and strengthen public education across the country.
