IIT Bombay Opens First US Campus

In a landmark development for Indian higher education, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has announced the establishment of its first-ever overseas sub-campus in the United States. The institute will set up the new campus in collaboration with the State University of New York (SUNY) at Old Westbury, marking a significant milestone in IIT Bombay’s global expansion.

The sub-campus is expected to begin operations in 2027, initially offering professional certificate programmes in cutting-edge fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Sustainability, and Clean Technology. The institute plans to gradually introduce undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes in the coming years.

According to IIT Bombay, the initiative aims to strengthen academic collaboration between India and the United States while providing international students with access to IIT Bombay’s globally recognised education. The partnership is also expected to promote joint research projects, faculty exchanges, innovation, entrepreneurship, and industry collaborations.

Officials stated that the new campus aligns with the objectives of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages Indian higher education institutions to expand globally and build international academic partnerships. The overseas campus is expected to enhance India’s presence in global education and create new opportunities for students, researchers, and faculty members.

With this move, IIT Bombay joins a growing number of Indian institutions seeking to establish an international footprint, reinforcing India’s ambition to become a global hub for quality higher education and research.
