Gauhati University Releases Guidelines for Introduction of 4th Year Under FYUGP
Gauhati University has released the operational guidelines for the implementation of the 4th year of the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme (FYUGP) in its affiliated colleges, in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The guidelines introduce two pathways for students—Honours and Honours with Research—and provide a framework for colleges to begin offering the fourth year from the academic session 2026–27.
A key provision allows all colleges offering Major programmes to introduce the 4th year, even if they do not have postgraduate programmes. To facilitate a smooth transition, the university has also announced special relaxations, including provisions for students with backlogs and simplified norms for research supervision and infrastructure requirements.
The university stated that students who successfully complete the 4th year and meet the required criteria will become eligible for direct PhD admission, creating new opportunities for advanced studies and research.
The detailed guidelines will be made available on the official Gauhati University website.
