Three government school teachers in Kerala have set an inspiring example of compassion and social responsibility by using the money they save on bus fares to support the evening meal programme for children of plantation workers.
The teachers — Nimisha, Jayasree Devan and Shalu Paulose — are associated with Ponmudi Government Upper Primary School in Thiruvananthapuram. They stepped in after financial difficulties affected the sponsorship for the school’s evening meal initiative, which provides food to children from economically disadvantaged plantation-worker families.
Rather than allowing the programme to suffer, the teachers decided to contribute their own money to ensure that the children continued receiving meals. Their contributions have also helped support some family members in need.
The initiative highlights the challenges faced by children from low-income families, for whom access to regular meals can be closely linked to their health, well-being and ability to learn. By helping sustain the programme, the teachers have demonstrated that educators can play an important role beyond the classroom.
Their efforts received recognition from Kerala Transport Minister C. P. John, who felicitated the teachers for their thoughtful initiative. Their actions have drawn appreciation for turning personal savings into meaningful assistance for vulnerable children.
The story serves as a reminder that small individual contributions can make a significant difference in a community, particularly when they help protect children’s access to food and education.
