The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has released the second part of its new Class 9 Social Science textbook, titled Understanding Society: India and Beyond – Part 2. The book is part of the revised curriculum being introduced for the 2026–27 academic session.
The new textbook is being introduced as part of NCERT’s broader curriculum transition aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023. The revised Social Science curriculum is designed to help students understand society through historical, geographical, political, economic and cultural perspectives.
According to the NCERT framework, the subject places emphasis on critical thinking, inquiry, evidence-based reasoning and problem-solving, rather than relying solely on memorisation. Students are also expected to develop an understanding of diversity, justice, sustainability and responsible citizenship.
The textbook forms part of the phased rollout of new Class 9 learning materials. NCERT has been introducing revised textbooks in line with the new school curriculum, with the new Social Science book following the release of other updated Class 9 resources.
The textbook is being made available through NCERT’s authorised sales channels, while digital access is also being provided through the NCERT textbook platform. Students, teachers and parents can access the official textbook resources through NCERT’s website.
The release marks another step in the ongoing transition towards the revised school curriculum for Class 9 students.
