545 Sivasagar Schools Hit by Floods

The recent floods in Assam’s Sivasagar district have severely impacted the education sector, with 545 schools reported to have suffered damage or disruption due to inundation. Floodwaters have affected classrooms, school buildings, furniture, learning materials, drinking water facilities, and sanitation infrastructure, forcing many institutions to suspend regular academic activities.

In response to the situation, the Assam Education Department, in coordination with the district administration, has initiated an extensive restoration plan to bring affected schools back to normal functioning as quickly as possible. Officials are conducting detailed assessments to determine the extent of damage at each institution and prioritising schools that require immediate repair and rehabilitation.

The restoration efforts include cleaning school campuses, repairing damaged classrooms, restoring electricity and drinking water facilities, rebuilding sanitation infrastructure, replacing damaged furniture, and ensuring that schools are safe for students and teachers before reopening. Authorities are also working to minimise learning disruptions by making necessary academic arrangements for students in the worst-affected areas.

The government has assured that all required resources will be mobilised to restore educational institutions and resume classes at the earliest. Special attention is being given to schools that have suffered extensive damage to ensure students do not face prolonged interruptions in their education.

Education officials have also emphasised the importance of creating safe learning environments after the floods, with inspections being carried out before schools are reopened. Relief and rehabilitation measures are being coordinated alongside infrastructure restoration to support both students and educational institutions affected by the disaster.

The restoration initiative reflects the state’s commitment to protecting the continuity of education and ensuring that thousands of students in flood-affected areas can return to classrooms safely and continue their academic journey without significant delays.
